Edna Jean Townsend (née Ross) October 2, 1938 – July 26, 2026 Edna Jean Townsend, affectionately known as Jean, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on October 2, 1938, in the small coal-mining community of Pyro, Ohio, Jean spent her childhood in the foothills of Appalachia, where she developed a lifelong appreciation for the beauty of nature, the value of hard work, and the importance of family. Those Appalachian roots remained a part of who she was throughout her life. Jean's love of learning led her to the University of Rio Grande, where she earned a degree in English and French. Her education reflected a lifelong curiosity and an enduring appreciation for language, learning, and the world around her. While living in Washington, D.C., Jean met and married Richard Townsend. As a Navy wife, she embraced a life of adventure, welcoming two daughters and traveling across all 50 states, 14 countries, and three continents. Whether adapting to a new culture, exploring unfamiliar places, or building friendships at each new assignment, she cherished the opportunity to experience the world. Beyond her love of travel, Jean possessed a deep spiritual curiosity. After thoughtfully exploring many religions, she became one of Jehovah's Witnesses, finding in the Bible the answers and hope she had long sought. Her faith became the cornerstone of her life, and she found great joy in sharing with others the Bible's promise of God's Kingdom and the hope of a peaceful future. Jean delighted in life's simple pleasures. She loved both telling and listening to funny stories, was an avid reader, and expressed her creativity through sewing, knitting, crocheting, and cross-stitch. She especially enjoyed making handmade gifts for family and friends. Above all, she treasured time spent with those she loved. Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Ora Kenneth Ross and Olive Edna Ross (née Meyers) of Jackson, Ohio; her beloved aunt, Gertrude S. Snedecor (née Meyers); her much-loved sisters, Julia A. (Larry) Dickens (née Ross) and Corinne G. Barnhart (née Ross); her brother-in-law, Jack Barnhart; her son-in-law, Bill Flood; her niece, Susan Ross; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Stephanie (John) Flood Merz and Rebecca (Ryan) Limpert; her granddaughters, Hayley (Jeff) Jubenville and Emma River Flood; her step-grandchildren, Vanessa (Matthew) Keyes and Liam (Jessica) Flood; her great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Charlotte, and Jasper Keyes, and Jessa, Joelle, and Jameson Jubenville; her brother, Marvin (Violetta) Ross; her sister, Barbara (Lynn) Board; and many beloved nieces and nephews, including Kim Barnhart, Paula (Adam) McCallum, Andrew (Cadie) Barnhart, Amy (Adam) Lawson, Ryan Coburn, Michael (Missy) Ross, Brian (Ashlee) Taylor, Samantha Board along with many extended family members and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and friendship. Jean deeply cherished the Bible-based hope that sustained her throughout her life—that death is not the end, but a temporary sleep until the promised resurrection. The words of Revelation 21:3–4, among her favorite scriptures, brought her comfort and confidence in God's promise of a future free from pain, sorrow, and death. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home.
