Sylvia Selester Tanner

Sylvia Tanner was born on September 19th, 1937, passed away peacefully on January 21st 2025. She was the daughter of Elijah and Ellen Austin and the sister to 16 siblings. She was proceeded in death by her loving husband Hearl Tanner, Brothers - Enos Austin, George (Emma Jean) Austin, Bonfiles (Pat) Austin, and infant Elijah Jr., Sisters - Shirley (Phillip) Smith, Bessie Thorton, Aretta (Chauncey) Valentine, Alberta (Oliver) Cousins, Charlotte (Reginald) Vaughn, Gertrude (Warren) Cousins and Ruth (John) Stewart. Sylvia was survived by her children Sally (Thaddeus/Pokie) Williams of Columbus and Barry (Beverly) Tanner of Jackson. Brothers - John (Carole) Austin, Homer (Kay) Austin, Richard Austin and Sister Connie (Brenton/Butch) Austin. She had three Grandchildren Barry and Courtney Tanner and Michael Burnette, between them she had seven Great-Grandkids, Sean, Roman, Ollie, Braxton, Bella, Lynnex and Amelia as well as many nieces and nephews. Her best friend and Brother-in-Law, Charles "Eddie" Tanner and Sister-in-Laws Opal Routt and Daisey Tanner. Sylvia was a faithful member of the United Community Baptist Church where she attended for many, many years until her health no longer allowed. She was a lady of great faith and her love for Jesus was known by everyone she met. Her favorite things to do were read her Bible, watch her Westerns and occasionally an episode of Judge Judy here and there. Anyone who came to know her would walk away with a smile and a story to tell. Her passing was a sad day for us, but the most beautiful homecoming for her. The family would like to thank the entire staff and residents of Heartland of Chillicothe, Adena Hospital and the wonderful Hospice Nurses that took care of her in her final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to a church or charity of your choice in her memory. Funeral services for Sylvia will be held at 1pm on Monday, January 27, 2025 at the Mayhew-Brown Funeral Home with burial in the Caldwell Cemetery to follow.
