Ruby Stewart Evans

Ruby Stewart Evans, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2024, at the age of 94. Born on May 23, 1930, to Will and Cora (Hughes) Stewart, Ruby grew up on the family farm outside of Jackson, Ohio with her siblings James, Bonnie, Clarabelle and Barbara. Ruby graduated from Jackson High School in 1948. On October 3, 1958, she married the love of her life, Thomas Bayes Evans. They shared nearly 23 years together before his passing in 1981, raising three children and creating a loving home. Her husband’s early passing didn’t deter Ruby from living a full life. She first traveled by airplane at age 54 to New York City to see the Broadway musical "Cats" with her beloved sister-in-law Jean (Evans) Ross with whom she shared a special bond. Another first was a trip to tour France and England at age 64 with son Tom. She also vacationed in the Caribbean and was always eager to travel to Texas, making her final trip at age 88 to attend the wedding of her grandson Tom in Corpus Christi. Once an empty nester, Ruby found fulfillment in her work in retail at M&E Jewelry, later Engraving Plus, assisting customers and sharing her kindness. A woman of strong faith, Ruby was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Jackson (now Christ Church), heading the Altar Guild for several years. She also attended White's Chapel United Methodist in Southlake, Texas and enjoyed seeing family members while watching online. Ruby survived a debilitating stroke in 2016. Perhaps one of her greatest achievements was participating in a clinical trial to study the efficacy and safety of endovascular thrombectomy in patients with large ischemic strokes. This led to the lifesaving treatment being quickly adopted as standard medical procedure. Not surprisingly she fought her way back with an incredible attitude of resilience and determination, gaining an additional eight years of joy-filled life. She witnessed her grandchildren's’ graduations and weddings, the birth of great grandchildren, and her 90th birthday celebration held on Zoom during the COVID pandemic. Special thanks to her daughter and son-in-law Teri and Roger Geiger, whose unwavering commitment and support helped Ruby maximize all that life had to offer in her final years. Ruby is survived by her sister, Barbara Turck and her loving children, Tracey Barnett (Rod) of Jackson, Ohio, Thomas Evans (Kimberly) of Dallas, Texas, and Teri Geiger (Roger) of Dublin, Ohio. She also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Matt Staten (Corina) of Oxford, Massachusetts, Cory Gallagher (Derek) of Pickerington, Ohio, Brandon Staten (Lauren) of Jackson, Ohio, Thomas Evans, Jr. (Victoria) of Columbus, Ohio, Karly Burley (Reid) of Dallas, Texas, and Ryan Evans of Denver, Colorado; as well as 11 adored great-grandchildren including her namesake, Ruby Seren Staten, and many cherished nieces and nephews. The family owes a debt of gratitude to Dr. Tom Davis, and to the caring staff of Capital City Hospice, Dublin Retirement Village, and Sunrise of Dublin. Ruby adored caregivers Robert Tejano and Lindsey Metter who became part of her extended family. A private burial will be held at Fairmount Cemetery with a celebration of life at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Ruby's honor to Christ Church of Jackson. Special thanks to Pastor Janie Karl for her faithfulness. Ruby will be remembered for her unwavering love and devotion to her family. She was a source of strength, wisdom, and inspiration. She will be dearly missed but is surely filled with joy to be in the presence of her Savior and reunited with her husband in heaven.
